Mood and Tone

When reading "Heart of Darkness," the reader can feel many motions. The mood is dull and mysterious. Now this doesn't mean dull as in boring, but dull as in gloomy or dark. One example is on page 70 from the book, "Don't you know the devilry of lingering starvation, its exasperating torment, its black thoughts, its sombre and brooding ferocity?" The story is full of details that makes the reader really feel dark and makes you wonder what the poor villagers are going through.
The author is able to show that Marlow and many other characters truly seek to find Kurtz. His tone shows that the characters main concern was in finding him. "There was a sense of extreme disappointment, as though I had found out I had been striving after something altogether without a substance" (pg. 78). The author wrote this to show that when the crew thought Kurtz as dead, they were full of disappointment and and lost their drive.
